This is a crucial question for everyone, not just writers and attorneys. It\u2019s so important, that this topic will form the basis for my new series &#8212;- <em>What if \u2026 ?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a writer and an attorney, this is an especially salient question for me since creativity is critical for both professions. This article will consider the importance of this question for writers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Story<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:37% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/kvfischerlaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Mt.-Meeker-Longs-Pk.jpg?w=720&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Mt. Meeker &amp; Longs Peak\" class=\"wp-image-693 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-regular-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes to plotting and developing a great story, writers constantly ask themselves, \u201cWhat if\u2026?\u201d With every twist and turn, regardless of the genre, this question is paramount. To capture and keep your readers, a writer must be true to reality. It\u2019s all about believeability.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Writers are frequently asked, \u201cWhere did the idea for this story come from?\u201d The answer starts with the following possibilities and the question: \u201cWhat if\u2026 ?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A news event flashes. You ask, \u201cWhat if\u2026?\u201d<\/li><li>You or someone you know experiences a tragic event. You ask, \u201cWhat if\u2026?\u201d<\/li><li>You or your friend\u2019s teenager is involved with someone with a questionable (nutty) family. You ask, \u201cWhat if\u2026?\u201d<\/li><li>You help someone through a difficult time. You ask, \u201cWhat if\u2026?\u201d<\/li><li>An idea just pops into your mind. You ask, \u201cWhat if\u2026?\u201d<\/li><li>You witness an event and ask, \u201cWhat if\u2026?\u201d<\/li><li>You take a trip and ask, \u201cWhat if\u2026?\u201d<\/li><li>As you develop and plot your story, at every twist and turn you ask, \u201cWhat if\u2026?\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Critical Legal and Business Considerations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:32% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"423\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/kvfischerlaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Photo-internet-315132_640.jpg?resize=640%2C423&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Business and Legal Issues\" class=\"wp-image-557 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/kvfischerlaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Photo-internet-315132_640.jpg?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/kvfischerlaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Photo-internet-315132_640.jpg?resize=300%2C198&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-regular-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The legal and business considerations go hand in hand since legal issues create business issues and visa versa. These can be brought to light with the simple question, \u201cWhat if\u2026?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What if this story is centered around real places, events, or people?<\/li><li>What if this story is true?<\/li><li>What if I sign a contract with an agent without obtaining legal counsel?<\/li><li>What if I have an agent who is not properly representing my interests?<\/li><li>What if I go with a traditional publisher and sign their contract without obtaining legal counsel?<\/li><li>What if the publisher has a take-it or leave-it attitude and refuses to negotiate out potentially harmful provisions?<\/li><li>What if there are provisions in this contract that I am not aware are harmful?<\/li><li>What if this contract jeopardizes my ability to publish another book under better terms?<\/li><li>What if I have not planned for the protection of my assets, including my copyright?<\/li><li>What if I die?
